Employee Misuse of Social Media
According to a recent employer survey sponsored by the Health Care Compliance Assiciation (HCCA) and the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE), 42 percent of corporate compliance officers surveyed said that employees were disciplined for misusing social media applications in 2011. This represents an 18 percent increase from a similar 2009 survey.
The survey also found that 31 percent of organizations had specific policies related to employee social media use outside of the workplace, compared to 10 percent of surveyed organizations in 2009. 45 percent of the 2011 respondents reported that their company had no policy on the use of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, outside of the workplace.
During working hours, 35 percent of companies surveyed ban access to Facebook and Twitter, while 20 percent block LinkedIn.
