Online Shopping Can Cause Employer Headaches
After Thanksgiving, when holiday gift buying kicks into high gear with big sales on "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday," employers can expect employees to do a fair amount of online shopping during company time.
According to a 2009 poll from the Bureau of National Affairs, about one-third of surveyed employees said they were intending to shop from work during the holiday season. Even without using company computers, increasing numbers of employees can do their bargain hunting from work via smart phones, such as iPhones and Droids.
In anticipation of these online shopping activities, employers should remind employees about policies on electronic monitoring and restrictions on the use of electronic communications devices in the workplace.
