HR Works to offer spring
Supervisor School dates
Four-session series to begin March 1
"Supervisor School: Human Resource Fundamentals for Managers and Supervisors" is a four-part management training series presented by HR Works, Inc. Participants will gain immediate knowledge of and practical applications for managing today’s workforce and will improve their understanding of federal and state laws governing employment.
HR Works’ Supervisor School sessions are scheduled for Thursdays as follows:
- "Getting the right fit: Best practices for selection and hiring," March 1. Companies that don’t settle when hiring, but rather insist on finding the best talent for a position, improve their productivity, retention rates and bottom line. This program will cover defining selection criteria; reviewing the application and/or resume; and developing effective behavior-based interview questions. The session also will address legal issues, interview steps, background checks and pre-employment testing.
- "Performance management: The continuous process," March 8. This program discusses the difficulties surrounding the decades-old tradition of employee evaluations and how organizations are now achieving greater results through their people while spending less time on the process. Managers and supervisors will master the coaching and counseling skills that lead to optimum employee performance. This interactive program will cover: the importance of feedback; the performance management cycle; legal issues pertaining to performance management; setting expectations; understanding skills, knowledge and talent; mastering feedback skills and tools; and dealing with difficult employee issues.
- "Write it down! Documenting those employee discussions," March 15. Preparing effective documentation is an important skill every supervisor and manager needs in today’s challenging workplace. Well-written documentation provides a tool for tracking improvement plans, responsibilities and results, and will provide support for employment decisions. A consistent practice of documentation is critical for guarding against claims of discrimination. Participants in this workshop will learn: when to document; how to track verbal or written warnings; how to overcome writer’s block; the five Ws of content; when to get employee input and signatures; and how to document performance reviews.
- "Termination: Facing the dreaded task," March 22. No job is tougher, even for seasoned supervisors. Feeling confident in the decision and communicating it effectively, while treating the employee with respect and dignity, is the key to a “successful” termination that also averts claims of discrimination. Participants in this session will learn how to: make a decision based on analysis of the employee record and company practice; address security issues; break the news; handle the employee’s as well as the supervisor’s emotions; determine a policy of escorts; and prepare for the unexpected.
All sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon at HR Works' second-floor training facility, 246 WillowBrook Office Park, Fairport. The cost is $150 per person per session. Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions for maximum benefit; however, attendees may choose fewer sessions. Early signup is recommended, as the sessions are expected to sell out quickly.
